Migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and other industrial-scarce states have been flocking to Surat in Gujarat for decades in search of factory jobs, leaving behind their villages, homes and families. Many have worked 12 to 14 hour shifts for 15-20 years without weekly offs, proper meal breaks or fair wages, facing salary deductions even for illness. Exhausted by these harsh conditions, the workers have finally raised their voice against factory owners and the administration, declaring they will not return to Surat and will not allow their children to become bonded laborers. As a result, Surat’s factories are gradually emptying while thousands of migrant laborers head back to their native villages. A ground report reveals the shocking reality of their daily struggle and the growing labor exodus from one of India’s major industrial hubs.
