He served in the Royal Navy for more than a decade. He fought in the Mediterranean, the North Sea and the Pacific. He was mentioned in despatches at nineteen. And of every warship he served aboard, not one survives.
This is the story of the ships of Prince Philip — nine of them. The cruiser HMS Calypso that carried him out of Greece as a baby in a fruit box. The battleship HMS Valiant, where a nineteen-year-old midshipman worked the searchlights in the night action at Cape Matapan. The worn-out destroyer HMS Wallace on the east coast convoys, in E-boat Alley and off Sicily. HMS Whelp in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender. And HMS Magpie, the only ship he ever commanded — for less than a year.
Every one of them has a different ending. Put side by side, those endings tell the story of what happened to the entire Royal Navy after 1945.
So where is Prince Philip's warship now?

Where in the world are you watching from? If you served in the Royal Navy — or your father or grandfather did — tell us his ship in the comments. There's a good chance someone here served aboard one of the ships in this video.
SOURCES & ARCHIVE
Photographs are drawn from Wikimedia Commons, including holdings of the Imperial War Museums, the Royal Museums Greenwich, the Library of Congress, the U.S. National Archives, the Nationaal Archief (Netherlands) and the State Library of Victoria. Archival film comes from the U.S. National Archives and Universal Newsreels via the Internet Archive, and from Wikimedia Commons. Wartime Crown Copyright and U.S. federal material is in the public domain.
Only one photograph each is known to survive in the public domain for HMS Wallace, HMS Whelp and HMS Chequers. Where the narration describes those ships, other shots show their sister ships of the same classes (V and W, W and Z, and C-class destroyers; Black Swan-class sloops), which were near-identical.
