During my journey through the Thar Desert in Sindh, Pakistan, I visited a remote village and met a Hindu sister from the Kolhi community whose life story deeply touched my heart.
She is a mother of six children, while her husband is struggling with mental health problems. As she shared the difficulties her family is facing, tears came to her eyes — and eventually, to mine as well.
It was Raksha Bandhan, the beautiful festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. In that emotional moment, I accepted her as my sister and she tied a Rakhi on my wrist.
According to the tradition of Raksha Bandhan, brothers give their sisters a gift or money after the Rakhi is tied. I also gave my new sister a gift and promised that I would return to her village and try to help her family further.
This journey is not only about the breathtaking Thar Desert landscape. It is also about humanity, compassion, friendship and the stories of people living far away from the modern world.
Come with me as I travel through the Thar Desert of Pakistan, meet this Hindu sister, experience her emotional story, and discover a side of rural Sindh that many people have never seen.
