Gaur Chowk Underpass | Gaur City Greater Noida | May 2026 Update

The “Gaur City Underpass” generally refers to the major under-construction underpass at Gaur Chowk / Char Murti / Kisan Chowk in Greater Noida West near Gaur City. It is one of the biggest traffic decongestion projects currently underway in Noida Extension. Why this underpass became necessary Gaur Chowk evolved into one of NCR’s worst traffic bottlenecks because it connects: • Noida Sector 71 / Parthala Flyover side • Greater Noida West residential townships • Surajpur and Greater Noida • Crossings Republik and Ghaziabad • Delhi-Meerut Expressway connectivity After the opening of the Parthala Flyover in 2023, traffic pressure shifted directly to Gaur Chowk instead of reducing completely. Residents started facing daily jams lasting 20–45 minutes during peak hours. The area today serves lakhs of residents living in: • Gaur City • Gaur City 2 • Cherry County • Nirala • ATS • Panchsheel • Ace projects • Numerous societies in Noida Extension Authorities estimated that traffic volume would continue rising sharply due to rapid residential growth and future airport connectivity. The biggest objective: • remove traffic signals and circular movement at Char Murti, • allow uninterrupted through traffic. Before this: • vehicles had to negotiate U-turns, • merge with heavy local traffic, • cross roundabout chaos. After completion: • long-distance through traffic will move below grade, • local traffic will use service roads and surface circulation. Metro Planning Coordination One major reason the project planning took time: the alignment had to consider the proposed: Noida Metro Greater Noida West Corridor Officials confirmed the underpass intersects with the future metro alignment. Because of this: • utilities, • pillars, • future right-of-way, • and road geometry had to be planned carefully together. Construction Timeline 2024: Ground work begins Construction officially accelerated around July 2024. Initial activities included: • tree shifting/cutting • drain diversion • utility relocation • electric pole shifting • cable relocation • service road construction Authorities created temporary diversions around the junction to keep traffic moving. Excavation phase By early 2025: • major excavation started, • barricading increased, • traffic diversions intensified. Commuters experienced severe inconvenience because: • service lanes became narrow, • heavy construction equipment occupied parts of the road, • bottlenecks formed during office hours. Slab and deck construction By late 2025: • roof slab work neared completion, • roundabout dismantling started, • authorities planned partial traffic opening over the slab. This was considered an important milestone because it allowed direct surface movement instead of temporary detours. Current Status (2026) Latest reports indicate: • project around 65% complete, • partial stretches already helping traffic, • final completion expected around mid-2026. GNIDA has been pushing contractors to finish before monsoon season due to heavy congestion complaints.
