Daily Drop 73. Finishing out this trumpet sonata, brass folks better chime and and let me know what to do next!
The finale of Kent Kennan's 1956 Sonata for Trumpet and Piano delivers an asymmetric rondo built on irregular accents, syncopation, and sudden dynamic bursts. Again the strange beaming decisions of the mid 20th century show up in force - I understand that Kennan wanted the piano part to feel rhythmically additive at Letter B and other times when the piano has that off kilter ostinato, but modern conventions (Gould et al) would prefer that be indicated with articulation and expression markings without the beaming completely disregarding the meter. ANYWAY, movements like this feel like a trust exercise; as long as everyone counts and observes everything on the page we get some nice contrasts and interesting staggered phrasing.
I'll also make a quick note - as you see I jotted down in the score, notice that each time it returns to Tempo I, it's notated as juuuust a click faster each time. So opening is mm 126, then letter E is mm 132, and letter I is mm 138. Gradual increase in energy throughout the movement, very neat effect for the finale.

About me:
Hey I'm RIchard M Blumenthal (not the senator). I have been lucky enough to have rehearsed and performed thousands on thousands of pieces as a collab pianist working for university schools of music, opera & musical theater companies, staff pianist for instrumental conferences and touring, freelancing in several major metro areas, and session work in genres from lofi hip hop to progressive metal for nerds on the internet.
Due to being more remote these days (moved to rural ohio whoops), my live performances are fewer, so this digital outlet channels the motivation I have to dust off pieces and be of service right from my piano setup in the woods.
I am building an archive to replace the lifeless MIDI files and distorted phone recordings of piano tracks currently out there. Stop practicing with a computer. Start rehearsing with a pianist 😉. And then hire me for your recital, of course.
