Las Vegas in the 1970s was home to one of the most sophisticated criminal money machines in American history.
The Chicago Outfit and its Midwest partners didn't need to rob casinos.
They controlled the system.
Using Teamsters pension money, clean frontmen, shadow management, rigged accounting, and trusted couriers, the Mafia quietly siphoned millions of dollars in untaxed cash out of casinos like the Stardust, Fremont, and Hacienda.
This was the Skim.
In this episode of MOB CHRONICLES, we examine how the Chicago Outfit built its Las Vegas financial empire, how Allen Glick became the public frontman, how Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal secretly ran the casino operation, how Carl Thomas manipulated the count room, and how Tony Spilotro was sent in as the Outfit’s violent insurance policy.
For years, the machine worked.
Then ego took over.
Rosenthal became too visible. Spilotro became too reckless. The Hole in the Wall Gang attracted federal attention. State regulators closed in. FBI wiretaps in Kansas City exposed the flow of Vegas money. And the same men hired to protect the operation ultimately helped destroy it.
The Mafia built a nearly perfect financial system.
But no system is stronger than the people running it.
