A man photographing a metal fabrication yard from a public place is approached by someone from the business who wants to know why. The photographer says he doesn’t have to explain himself. Within minutes both men are accusing each other of aggression, there is a dispute over a grabbed coat, and police are called. When the officer arrives, the photographer asks whether he is being detained and what crime is suspected. The officer cites antisocial behaviour and refers to Section 50 of the Police Reform Act, which he says requires the photographer to give his details. The photographer refuses. A second officer then hears the business side of the story and acknowledges that photography in a public place is permitted, provided it doesn’t cause harassment, alarm or distress. In this video we look at: Whether anyone has to explain why they are taking photos in public How the officer explained his suspicion and the power he cited What the officers said about the legality of photography How the two competing accounts compare with what the footage shows Everything here is based on what was said on camera. Claims made by either side are allegations, and we leave the judgment to you. Share your thoughts in the comments.
