Before 1851, measuring to 0.001 inch belonged to laboratories and master craftsmen. After 1851, it belonged to every machinist with a pocket caliper. This video traces the full history of the vernier caliper: the ancient problem of reading fractions between graduations, Pierre Vernier's brilliant method of asking which two lines align, and the watchmaker from Providence, Joseph Rogers Brown, who built a dividing engine just to engrave the scales accurately.
