Deep in Gold Butte National Monument, in the far corner of southern Nevada, there's a hole roughly a hundred feet across and about as deep, with walls that overhang the drop and keep crumbling in. It's called Devil's Throat, and it's still growing. The sign at the site says it opened around 1908, when cowboys heard a roar and saw a column of dust rise from the desert. But no newspaper, letter or record from the time has ever turned up to prove it.
In this video: how a cover-collapse sinkhole forms, who was actually out in Gold Butte around 1908, the records that should exist and don't, whether this is a young hole or an old one that picked up a legend, and what it would take to finally answer the question.
If your family has roots around Mesquite, Bunkerville, Overton, Littlefield or St. George and you have an old photo, letter or story about Devil's Throat, tell us in the comments.
