Everyone repeats the same number about Centralia, Pennsylvania: the underground mine fire will burn for another 250 years. We went looking for where that number actually comes from, and it does not come from anyone who ever measured the fire. It comes from a magazine. So we checked what the state's own boreholes read today, and the truth is stranger than the legend.

This is the real story of the town that has been on fire since 1962. We trace the famous "250 years" claim back to a single 2005 Smithsonian article, follow the 20-year war the U.S. Bureau of Mines fought to dig the fire out and lost, and check the measured record: gas vents that once ran over 850 degrees now sitting cold, a 2020 drone survey that found nothing hotter than a warm afternoon, and a fire that has quietly crawled away from Main Street toward the cemeteries. Along the way we settle the death-toll myth, the Todd Domboski sinkhole, and which Silent Hill actually borrowed Centralia. What is still running there today is not the fire. It is the machines that measure it.
