How many times have I visited Huayan Temple in Datong, Shanxi, China? Whenever I return to Datong, I find myself coming back to this remarkable temple.
From the grandeur of the main hall to the exquisite wooden structures of the Liao Dynasty, from pigeons resting beneath ancient eaves to a smiling bodhisattva known as the “Eastern Venus,” every visit feels like a new encounter.
In 1933, Chinese architectural historians Liang Sicheng, Liu Dunzhen, and their colleagues surveyed ancient buildings in Datong, bringing greater attention to the historical and architectural significance of Huayan Temple.
This film is more than a guide to ancient architecture. It is a personal journey through art, history, preservation, and the quiet moments that make us linger: a cloud above a temple roof, a pigeon in the sunlight, and a smile that has endured for nearly a thousand years.
Why do we keep returning to places we already know? Perhaps the place remains the same, while the person looking at it keeps changing.
Life, feelings, and experiences. Everything else, slowly.
