This time, I traveled to Hunyuan, Shanxi, to visit three remarkable historic Buddhist temples: Xuankong Temple, Yong’an Temple, and Yuanjue Temple. I had visited Xuankong Temple years ago. Back then, standing on the cliff made my legs tremble. Coming back years later, the temple has become much safer, with higher railings, controlled visitor numbers, and a one-way route. Yet somehow, I no longer felt afraid. Perhaps the temple became safer. Or perhaps I simply grew older. At Yong’an Temple, the experience was completely different. Inside the Yuan-dynasty Hall of the Orthodox Transmission, magnificent Ming-dynasty murals cover the walls. Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures all appear together, creating an astonishing picture of an entire imagined universe. A guide explained the murals to us for half an hour. I remembered almost nothing. But I remembered the colors. The eyes. The expressions. And the fact that mineral pigments helped preserve those colors for centuries. Finally, at Yuanjue Temple, only its beautiful brick pagoda remains from the original complex. At the very top is a small iron phoenix, known locally as a “weather bird,” which can rotate with the wind. Three temples. Three completely different encounters with time. Perhaps travel is not about remembering everything. Sometimes it is simply about standing somewhere, looking carefully, being astonished for a while—and then continuing down the road. 00:00 浑源三寺|Three Temples in Hunyuan 01:14 悬崖上的悬空寺|Xuankong Temple on the Cliff 04:20 梦里的悬空寺|The Xuankong Temple in a Dream 06:35 永安寺:壁上的众生|Yong’an Temple: A World on the Walls 11:05 圆觉寺与塔顶的凤凰|Yuanjue Pagoda and the Wind Bird 13:06 我们都只是路过|We Are Only Passing Through
