The Fast and the Furious (2001): 15 strange facts you never knew
Universal offered Timothy Olyphant the lead and would only greenlight the film if he signed. He passed, calling the script stupid. Eminem got offered the role too and chose 8 Mile instead. Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale both said no. Vin Diesel only came aboard after negotiating to go through the script page by page with his own notes. The original draft was set in New York with an all Italian cast, before writer David Ayer, who grew up in South Central, refused to touch it unless he could move the story to Los Angeles and rebuild it around the real tuner culture he'd actually lived around.
Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster didn't even have driver's licenses when they were cast in a movie about street racing. Both had to pass intensive driving tests or get recast. Rodriguez also refused to play Letty as a trophy girlfriend, and when the original script had Letty cheat on Dom with Brian, she said she'd rather quit than film it. Vin Diesel backed her, the writers caved, and the entire love triangle got cut. Before filming, Walker and Diesel went to a real illegal street race and literally got chased by police helicopters through a dark alley, an experience that directly inspired one of the film's key bonding scenes.
Vin Diesel turned down a reported $25 million to return for the sequel, believing the first film could become a genuine classic if it wasn't rushed. He only came back years later with a producer credit and creative control. Ja Rule turned down $500,000 to reprise his character in the sequel, so the role got rewritten for Ludacris instead, who's reportedly earned over $20 million from the franchise since. Technical advisor Craig Lieberman rented out his own personal cars for filming, including the orange Supra Brian drives, and you can spot him in the background flagging the starts during the Race Wars scenes.
This movie is essentially Point Break with cars, right down to a deliberate nod where Dom and Brian eat at the exact same Malibu restaurant featured in the original 1991 film. And the title itself came from a trade. Producer Neal Moritz spotted a 1954 B movie with the same name in a Roger Corman documentary, and instead of paying for the rights, Universal traded Corman access to their stock footage library.
And the bonus: Mia Toretto was reportedly written for Eliza Dushku first. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jessica Biel, Kirsten Dunst, and Natalie Portman were all in the mix before Jordana Brewster finally landed the role, the same actress who couldn't legally drive when she was cast.
