📕 The Plain Heat Library, a warm house all winter for less, written down: https://elisplainheat.netlify.app/?b=bundl... My neighbor had six quilts on his bed and still woke up cold at three in the morning, in his back and his hips. The cold was not coming from the room. It was coming from underneath. The fix came from my grandson's hunting tent: a plain blue closed-cell foam camping pad from the Walmart camping aisle. It makes no heat at all. It only keeps yours. In this video I show you why it works when a pile of blankets does not, where it goes, the three mistakes that make it useless, and where the "eight dollars" really comes from. In this video: • Why you wake up warm on top and cold underneath • How heat leaves your body in bed, and why a blanket under you gets pressed flat • Why a thick mattress does not stop it, and what "closed cell" means • What the camping world measured (the ASTM F3340 test and R-value) • Using it in a recliner, on the floor during an outage, and under your feet • The three mistakes: under the mattress, bare foam, and damp underneath • The $8: Walmart lists the Ozark Trail pad at $14.98 this fall; cut in half to shoulder-to-hip length, it is $7.49 a bed. Prices change by store. • The order to make the bed, from the bottom up Figures come from the Walmart product listing, ASHRAE, ASTM International, REI, Therm-a-Rest, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), the American Diabetes Association and the U.S. EPA. Results depend on your bed, your room and your weather. Safety first: • The pad makes no heat. Do not add old electric blankets: ESFI says replace any electric blanket or heating pad older than 10 years. Never fold one or sleep on its cord. • No hot bricks, hot stones or candles in or near the bed. Foam is made to stop heat, not to stand up to flame. • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from the bed and bedding, plugged straight into the wall, and off when you sleep. Never near the foam. • If you have diabetes, poor circulation or less feeling in your feet, keep hot water bottles and heating pads off your feet, and talk to your doctor before you change how you keep warm at night. • Air the bed once a week: lift the pad, check for damp, and dry any damp bedding. A mattress on a cold floor with no air under it can grow mold. • Never heat your home with a grill, a generator, a camp stove or the kitchen oven. Carbon monoxide alarms on every floor and near the bedrooms. Gas burners, valves and lines are for the technician.
