Beneath the name “Devils Tower” lies nearly 13,000 years of Native American history, ancient hunters, bison kill sites, sacred traditions, war, and a story most visitors never hear. In this documentary, we travel backward through time at Devils Tower National Monument — also known as Bear Lodge or Mato Tipila — uncovering six layers of human history surrounding one of the most mysterious landmarks in the American West. We begin in 1875, when an expedition into the Black Hills helped establish the name “Devils Tower,” during the same period that gold discoveries, broken treaties, and the Great Sioux War transformed the region. Then we go deeper. We explore the Lakota and other Plains nations connected to Bear Lodge, the centuries-old struggle for control of the Black Hills, and the sacred traditions that still continue around the Tower today. Thousands of years earlier, hunters near Devils Tower were using the landscape in extraordinary ways. At the Vore Buffalo Jump, generations of Plains peoples drove entire herds of bison into a natural sinkhole — a site containing thousands of animals and layers of archaeological evidence. Go back even further and the story reaches the McKean archaeological tradition, Cody-complex hunters, ancient stone tools, and finally the oldest verified evidence of humans in this part of Wyoming roughly 13,000 years ago. Devils Tower itself barely changes through any of it. The people change. The climate changes. Cultures rise and disappear. Territory changes hands. But the Tower remains. This is not just the story of a strange rock formation. It is the story of 13,000 years of human history surrounding one of America's most sacred and misunderstood places.
