Most convenient grocery items are food you already buy, cut up or mixed and sold back to you for two or three times the price. Here are the 10 I stopped buying, what I make instead for pennies, and the few store-bought things that are worth every cent. My book, The Waste-Nothing Kitchen: first comment for link 69 short chapters, including the full "Stop Buying These" list, plus a printable price book and freezer inventory. My taco seasoning (enough for 3 lb of meat): 2 tbsp chili powder, 1 tbsp ground cumin, 1 tsp each garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and dried oregano, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, pinch of red pepper flakes. Use 2 tbsp per pound of browned meat with 1/4 cup water. Tell me in the comments: what's the one thing you stopped buying because you make it yourself now?
