Dhammapada 3-5: 3) “He abused me, attacked me, defeated me, robbed me”—for someone hostile like this, hatred does not end. 4) “He abused me, attacked me, defeated me, robbed me”—for someone NOT hostile like this, hatred ends. 5) For hatred never ends through hatred. By non-hate alone does it end. This is an ancient truth” (Fronsdal)
Our thoughts lead to moods, delusions, obsessions. Meditate to calm our mind/tame our heart. We look at our thoughts, examine them, see them for what they are, and let them go. IF WE LET GO a little, we get a little serenity. Let go a lot, we get a lot of serenity. Let go completely (accept life on life’s terms) we FIND complete serenity.
We’re mindful of the 4 Noble Truths, 8-Fold Path, 5 Khandhas, the 3 Marks of Existence as tools to elevate practice. Our human condition consists of 5 Khandhas (our body, feelings, memories/ perceptions, thoughts, consciousness). Anicca, dukkha, anatta.
THREE (3) Duties of a meditator:
1. Mindfulness (ball of light and Dhamma talk)
2. Collectedness (concentration)
3. Contentment (NOW, not Thursday) quiet non-attachment over NOISY attachment
In a word, PEACE. Stitch together PATCHES of PEACEFULNESS and SHAZAM!
Consider past week with cool eyes asking: 1) Minimizing my part/exaggerating theirs? 2) Setting self up as a vicitim? 3) Expecting people to be what they are not? 4) Expecting perfection? Let’s tune in to God (1st half)
PANNA: Buddhists don’t have an anthropormorphic God, more akin to the Tao, the Way, Iron Laws of the Universe—call it Good Orderly Direction, Grace Over Drama, Great Universal Spirit, a Power greater than ourself, Love, Metta, whatever you turn to in need. G.O.D. broadcasts 24/7 on the FM dial, but we have to tune out the static and tune in to the dulcet tones of God’s voice. We know God is a gentleman, He doesn’t go where He’s not invited. But also know when we seek God our life changes for the better. I have no idea what God looks like, couldn’t pick him out of a lineup. But when I seek Him, my life is one way; when I don’t it’s a whole other way. When it comes to relieving our suffering, seeking a God-centered life beats the bondage of SELF. Humility, sincerity, effort & gratitude are keys.
We’re grateful for the teaching. Dhammapada 76) “Like someone pointing to a treasure is the wise person who sees your faults and points them out. Associate with such a sage. Good will come of it, not bad, if you associate with one such as this.” I know a guy who regards his HP as a wise friend who is always there. We all have access to that friend. We are deluded when we believe we walk alone—NO, we are a part of, not apart from Transcendent Reality—God. Our conscience is the still small voice that reminds us when we’re self-seeking, lazy, unwilling, selfish, full of doubt & lost in the bondage of Self. That voice is Good Orderly Direction telling us to straighten up, tune in and Practice.
Dhammapada 83) “Virtuous people always let go. They don’t prattle about pleasures & desires. Touched by happiness & then by suffering, the sage shows no sign of being elated or depressed. 89) Those who fully cultivate the Factors of Awakening, give up grasping, enjoy non-clinging, & have destroyed the toxins, are luminous, & completely liberated in this life.” We are taught there is suffering. It’s caused by attachment. It ceases with non-attachment. The Way to that is the 8-fold Path. Patient, persistent practice of the principles leads to peace and equanimity. That’s our take on it, but don’t take our word, try it for yourself.
The Noble Ones say selfless service is best done by seeking God and being of service to the Divine Spark in others. Let’s tune in to God FM, and don’t touch that dial.
