*GUNSMOKE – “CROWBAIT BOB”*
Original Air Date: November 10, 1956
A seemingly penniless old man manages to surprise Dodge City from beyond the grave in “Crowbait Bob,” a fascinating 1956 episode of the legendary CBS radio Western *Gunsmoke*. William Conrad stars as U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon in the original radio version of the series, where intelligent writing and richly developed characters turned even an old drifter's final wishes into compelling frontier drama.
*Synopsis*
Crowbait Bob is an impoverished old man nearing the end of his life, seemingly without property, prospects, or anything of value to leave behind. Yet before dying, Bob draws up a will naming Kitty as the beneficiary of everything he owns, a gesture that initially seems touching but almost pointless considering his poverty. After his death, however, the strange inheritance begins raising questions about what Bob may actually have possessed and why he chose Kitty to receive it. Matt becomes involved as unexpected interest in the old man's estate reveals that appearances can be deceptive, and Bob's final act proves that even a penniless frontier drifter can arrange one last surprise for the people who underestimated him during his lifetime.
*About Gunsmoke*
The radio Gunsmoke premiered over CBS in 1952 and quickly became one of the most acclaimed dramatic programs in American broadcasting. Producer/director Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston created a Western aimed squarely at adults, emphasizing realistic characters and moral complexity rather than the simple hero-and-villain formulas associated with many earlier Western adventures.
William Conrad's deep, distinctive voice defined Matt Dillon for millions of radio listeners. His Dillon could be formidable when confronting violence but was equally convincing in quieter stories involving the ordinary citizens and outsiders who passed through Dodge. Parley Baer portrayed Chester Wesley Proudfoot, while Georgia Ellis brought intelligence, compassion, and independence to Kitty Russell. Howard McNear completed the core ensemble as the irascible but caring Doc Adams.
The remarkable production also benefited from detailed sound effects and Rex Koury's evocative musical scoring, helping listeners visualize Dodge City's boardwalks, saloons, offices, dusty streets, horses, wagons, and surrounding prairie entirely through sound.
*Audio Restoration & Enhancement*
Significant audio restoration and enhancement work has been performed on this vintage recording. Processing may include reduction of background hiss and hum, mitigation of clicks and other source artifacts, dialogue enhancement, tonal correction, level balancing, and careful final mastering. The goal is to provide a clearer and more consistent listening experience without sacrificing the atmosphere and historic character of the surviving broadcast. Some imperfections may remain because of the age and condition of original source recordings.
