Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve decides to spend a quiet evening improving his mind in “An Evening with a Good Book,” originally broadcast June 10, 1945. Of course, anyone familiar with life in Summerfield knows that Gildy’s plans for a peaceful evening rarely unfold exactly as intended. SYNOPSIS Gildersleeve sets out with the admirable intention of enjoying an evening devoted to a good book. A little peace, quiet, and serious reading should provide a welcome change from the everyday distractions of family life and Summerfield society. At least, that is the plan. Unfortunately for Gildy, concentrating on literature proves more difficult than anticipated. Household interruptions, competing interests, and Gildersleeve’s own tendency to become distracted begin interfering with his carefully imagined evening. The more determined he becomes to enjoy some quiet intellectual recreation, the more elusive that peaceful evening seems to become. The premise provides an ideal showcase for the kind of domestic comedy that made The Great Gildersleeve so successful. Instead of requiring an extraordinary adventure, the program could build an entire episode around a recognizable everyday experience: someone simply trying to find enough peace and quiet to read. Gildersleeve’s outsized personality then turns that modest goal into something much larger. By 1945, The Great Gildersleeve had become one of NBC radio’s established comedy favorites. Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve had originally appeared as a recurring character on Fibber McGee and Molly, but Harold Peary’s performance proved popular enough to support a separate series beginning in 1941. The result was a landmark radio spin-off built around Gildy’s life as guardian to Marjorie and Leroy and his adventures among the citizens of Summerfield. Much of the program’s enduring appeal comes from the contrast between Gildersleeve’s view of himself and the reality understood by everyone around him. He may see himself as dignified, authoritative, sophisticated, and entirely in control, but family life has a dependable way of proving otherwise. AUDIO RESTORATION This American Radio Rewind presentation has undergone significant audio restoration and enhancement. Historic radio recordings can contain hiss, hum, crackle, clicks, distortion, inconsistent volume, and other artifacts created by aging transcription discs and successive generations of analog copying. Restoration work has focused on reducing intrusive noise, improving speech intelligibility, balancing levels, and enhancing clarity while retaining the warmth and atmosphere of the original 1945 recording. Every effort is made to preserve the authentic character of old time radio rather than artificially modernizing it. CAST & PRODUCTION CREDITS The Great Gildersleeve stars Harold Peary as Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve. The principal cast of this era included Walter Tetley as Leroy Forrester, Louise Erickson as Marjorie Forrester, and Lillian Randolph as Birdie Lee Coggins. Familiar recurring performers included Richard LeGrand as Peavey, Earle Ross as Judge Horace Hooker, and Shirley Mitchell as Leila Ransom. The standalone series was developed by Leonard L. Levinson from the Gildersleeve character introduced on Fibber McGee and Molly. The program aired over the NBC radio network and was sponsored during this period by Kraft Foods.
