A powerful surge of tropical moisture from the remnants of post-tropical storm Rachel slammed the Las Vegas Valley on Sunday, October 11, 2026, unleashing flash floods that turned the desert city into a watery maze. Harry Reid International Airport recorded 1.08 inches of rain by 7 a.m. — shattering the daily record of 0.78 inches set in 2012, and more rain than the city saw in its entire 2026 monsoon season. The deluge came as deep tropical moisture streamed into the Mojave Desert, colliding with an upper-level system. Desert soil and concrete could not absorb the intense bursts, so storm channels and roadways flooded within minutes — with parts of northwest Las Vegas receiving more than 2.5 inches. Floodwaters rushed through streets near the Las Vegas Strip — near The LINQ Promenade, Hotel Rio and the Sphere. Police blocked roads at East Flamingo and Koval Lane; the Regional Transportation Commission closed all lanes of Primm Boulevard at I-15, cutting the main route to California. Stranded drivers were rescued from standing water on the 215 at Charleston Boulevard, while strong winds gusted to 40 miles per hour. In this video, we track the record-breaking rainfall, the water rescues and major road closures, why desert flooding turns dangerous so quickly, and what comes next for the Southwest.
