Everyone who has ever looked up has seen the same face of the Moon. Cleopatra, your great-grandparents, even the dinosaurs. So why does it never turn around?
The Moon does spin, exactly once per orbit, and that's no coincidence. We follow a cosmic tug-of-war: how Earth braked a hot, fast-spinning baby Moon until it locked in place, how we sneak a peek at 59% of it, the "dark side" that isn't dark, Luna 3's first photos of the far side (taken on October 7, 1959, 67 years ago today), Chang'e 4 and Artemis II, and how the Moon is now getting its revenge: stretching our days and drifting away as fast as your fingernails grow.
