Looking to break into one of the highest-paying skilled trades without college debt? In this video, we break down how to become an apprentice in the elevator industry through the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) and the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) nationwide, with a special focus on the requirements and opportunities in California.
Training Requirements:
As an elevator apprentice, you earn while you learn—gaining hands-on job site experience and classroom training while earning competitive wages, health benefits, and retirement plans from day one. The program is 4 to 5 years in length, requires a minimum of 2,000 hours of on-the -job training and 144 classroom hours annually (typically one evening per week).
Curriculum Focus:
It covers electrical and mechanical systems, blueprint reading, safety procedures, tool knowledge, and elevator/escalator troubleshooting. Although you've rode on many elevators and escalators in your lifetime, they don't expect you to be a master of this field on day one. They do expect for you to be punctual, coachable, safety conscience and dedicated to learning your craft/trade.
Minimum Qualifications:
Age: At least 18 years old at the time of application.
Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. There are plenty of prep clubs to help you pass the test on-line
Legal Status: Legally eligible to work in the United States.
Drug Screening: Pass a standard drug test.
Transportation & Fitness: Valid driver’s license and the physical ability to perform heavy construction work.
The 5-Step Application Process:
Find an Open Recruitment: NEIEP recruitments open periodically by local union jurisdiction and only stay open for a limited time (or until an application cap is reached). Check upcoming recruitments at the official NEIEP website.
Submit Your Application: Fill out all required forms and upload proof of education, credentials, and work history.
Pass the EIAT Exam: Complete the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (covering reading comprehension, basic mechanical aptitude, and practical math) plus the hands-on tool assessment. There are plenty of prep clubs to help you prepare for and pass the test on-line, just research them.
Complete the Interview: Interview in front of a joint apprenticeship committee panel.
Get on the Ranking List: Candidates are ranked based on their interview scores. When local companies need apprentices, they call candidates in order from this list.
🌴 California Focus:
California has some of the highest wage packages and largest commercial, residential, and transit projects in the country. Key IUEC locals include:
IUEC Local 8 (Northern California / San Francisco Bay Area)
IUEC Local 18 (Southern California & Las Vegas)
Note: Apprenticeship application windows in California open periodically based on workforce demand. Check local union announcements regularly to catch the opening dates!
