🔥Fireside Friends | Six Weeks Old – Confidence, Curiosity & Growing Independence🔥

Our Fireside Friends puppies are officially six weeks old, and this is such an exciting developmental stage! Today we decided to keep our adventures indoors, as smoke from the surrounding fires has been lingering in our area over the past several days. Fortunately, there is still plenty of exploring and learning that can happen inside! Over the past several weeks, we have been gradually building on the puppies’ sensory experiences. Each week, their world becomes just a little bigger as we introduce new sights, sounds, textures, surfaces, toys and environments. Today, we expanded their world again by opening up a larger sensory and play area filled with several toys and objects that were completely new to them. These transitions are intentional. Rather than suddenly placing a young puppy into a large, unfamiliar environment, we gradually increase the complexity of their surroundings. This gives them an opportunity to explore at their own pace, work through something unfamiliar and discover that new experiences can be safe and rewarding. At six weeks old, we are seeing some wonderful developmental milestones: 🔥Greater independence – The puppies are becoming increasingly comfortable moving away from their littermates and exploring on their own. 🔥Growing curiosity – New objects, sounds and environments are becoming invitations to investigate rather than simply something unfamiliar. 🔥 Developing confidence and resilience – Puppies are beginning to work through small challenges and recover more quickly when something surprises or startles them. 🔥More sophisticated social skills – Play between littermates is becoming increasingly interactive, helping puppies learn communication, boundaries and appropriate social behaviour. 🔥 Improved coordination and body awareness – Running, climbing, navigating different surfaces and interacting with toys all help develop balance, coordination and an understanding of how their bodies move through the world. 🔥 Emerging individual personalities and problem-solving styles – At this age, we begin to see more clearly how each puppy approaches something new. Some jump right in, some stop and observe, some investigate independently and others look for a little reassurance before moving forward. This last milestone is especially important because six weeks is also assessment and puppy-matching time for our Fireside Friends litter. We aren't looking for every puppy to respond in exactly the same way. Instead, we are watching and learning about the individual puppy in front of us, how they engage with people, respond to something unfamiliar, recover from a surprise, seek connection, explore independently and navigate their environment. All of these little pieces help us better understand who each puppy is becoming and help guide us as we thoughtfully match puppies with their future families. 🔥Our goal throughout these early weeks isn't to create puppies who have never experienced uncertainty. It is to give them age-appropriate opportunities to experience something new, work through it successfully and build confidence along the way.
