In this wide-ranging conversation with the Insight Myanmar Podcast, I reflect on nearly five decades of meditation practice, my years as a Theravāda Buddhist nun in the Ajahn Chah tradition, and a question that has become central to my teaching: What happens when profound meditation practice doesn't reach all the places where we are wounded? We talk about the experiences that shaped my spiritual life—from beginning meditation at seventeen, encounters with extraordinary teachers including Dipa Ma, and surviving a Himalayan black bear attack, to decades of monastic practice and the painful rupture with the community that had been my spiritual home. We also explore what happened afterward. Despite years of deep practice and genuine insight, I discovered that meditation alone wasn't sufficient to resolve trauma and attachment wounds. Healing required learning to distinguish different dimensions of development—and recognizing that awakening, psychological healing, attachment repair, and trauma recovery don't necessarily unfold together. Our conversation moves into questions of power and harm in spiritual communities: patriarchy and women's authority, coercive control, the difficulty of recognizing harm from inside a community we love, and why spiritual realization doesn't automatically make someone psychologically mature or incapable of causing harm. And we explore what I've learned about trauma-informed meditation—including when meditation is supportive, when it can become another way of overriding the nervous system, and why safety may sometimes need to come before deeper practice. Ultimately, this is a conversation about liberation without idealization: honoring the profound possibilities of meditation while becoming more precise about what meditation can—and cannot—do.
