That question stayed with me through this entire motorcycle ride from Pune to Bedse Caves — an ancient Buddhist rock-cut complex tucked away in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra. At first, Bedse feels surprisingly isolated. But after climbing up to the caves and taking in the scale of the rock-cut architecture, that isolation only made the question more interesting — why put this much effort into building something here?
