There's a town in Ohio where you can hold up a panoramic photo from 1909 and the buildings still line up. On its square, a hardware store has been run by one family since 1845, and down the street an opera house has shown movies every week since 1913, except for a single week in 1936. We count down ten Ohio towns frozen in time: Bellefontaine, Lisbon, Waynesville, Peninsula, Milan, Burton, Somerset, Ripley, Mount Pleasant and McConnelsville.
For each town: what froze it (a failed canal, a railroad that went somewhere else, a highway that skipped it), what you can still see, the Census median home value, and the honest catch. Home values are US Census Bureau ACS 2020–2024 estimates; small villages carry wide margins of error, and we say so on screen.
