Cities Beneath the Trees: The Ancient Amazon Before Europeans Arrived

Long before Europeans entered the Amazon, many parts of the rainforest were already home to complex societies that reshaped their surroundings in ways only now becoming fully visible. This journey explores the ancient Amazon through the evidence left beneath the canopy: geometric earthworks, raised fields, monumental platforms, plazas, causeways, canals, road networks, Amazonian dark earth, and forests enriched with useful plants over generations. From the planned settlements of the Upper Xingu and the engineered wetlands of the Llanos de Mojos to the vast earthworks of Acre and the interconnected communities of Ecuador’s Upano Valley, archaeology is challenging the older image of the pre-Columbian Amazon as an almost untouched wilderness inhabited only by small, scattered groups. LiDAR mapping, soil analysis, charcoal records, archaeobotany, and landscape ecology now reveal a far more varied human past, although population estimates and the scale of ancient urbanism remain debated. The story also follows what happened after European contact, when disease, displacement, enslavement, and colonial disruption contributed to major demographic changes in many regions. As settlements were abandoned and infrastructure lost its maintenance, forest gradually returned over roads, fields, and plazas.
