The Ocean Was Their Road: The Lapita Voyage Into Remote Oceania

More than 3,000 years ago, communities associated with the Lapita cultural complex began one of the most remarkable maritime expansions in human history, moving eastward from the Bismarck Archipelago through Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa into Remote Oceania. This episode follows that journey not as a simple migration across empty water, but as the creation of a connected oceanic world. Through dentate-stamped Lapita pottery, obsidian exchange, coastal settlements, transported crops and animals, experimental sailing research, and ancient DNA, we explore how voyagers turned vast stretches of the Pacific into routes linking distant islands. The story also reveals why Lapita identity cannot be reduced to a single people or ancestry: genetic evidence increasingly shows repeated movements, encounters, and mixing between populations with different histories, including later Papuan-related migrations into parts of western Remote Oceania. Along the way, we examine how settlers established gardens, adapted to reefs and unfamiliar environments, maintained long-distance exchange networks, and gradually developed increasingly local traditions. By the time classic Lapita pottery began to disappear, the people themselves had not vanished.
