In 1912, the Egyptian Army needed a working animal for its desert transport corps. It picked a donkey over a horse. Not because horses weren't available, but because a horse would have collapsed within days on that terrain, while the donkey just kept walking. Ask most people why we don't ride donkeys like horses, and you'll get the same lazy answers: slow, stupid, stubborn. All three are wrong. The real story goes back thousands of years, to two completely different landscapes that shaped two completely different animals. This video covers: ✅ Why horses and donkeys evolved for two entirely different jobs ✅ How the open steppe built the horse for speed, and the desert built the donkey for endurance ✅ Why "stubborn" donkeys are actually being cautious, not defiant ✅ How the mule was bred to combine both animals' strengths, and why it's always sterile ✅ Why donkeys, not horses, kept the ancient world's trade routes moving ✅ How status and language, not biology, gave the donkey its bad reputation ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔬 KEY SOURCES & REFERENCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Domestication of horses: the Botai culture, Kazakhstan, c. 5,000–6,000 years ago → [ADD LINK] Domestication of donkeys from the African wild ass, Northeast Africa → [ADD LINK] Equine cognition studies comparing donkey and horse learning ability → [ADD LINK] Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): estimates of working donkey populations today → [ADD LINK] The Donkey Sanctuary: guidance on donkey size, welfare and riding suitability → [ADD LINK] ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚠️ DISCLAIMER ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ This video is for educational & entertainment purposes only.
