Why Music Feels Different in the Dominican Republic

Music in the Dominican Republic is more than entertainment. It’s part of the culture, the energy, the memories, and the way people connect. After living here, one thing I’ve come to appreciate is how music seems to be everywhere. You hear it coming from colmados, cars, homes, restaurants, barbershops, and sometimes from a speaker that you swear has no business being that loud. 😂 But that’s part of the experience. In this video, I’m talking about the music that helps give the Dominican Republic its personality, from bachata and merengue to salsa and the newer generation of dembow. We’ll talk about artists like Romeo Santos, Anthony Santos, Luis Vargas, Juan Luis Guerra, Eddie Herrera, Rubby Pérez, Yiyo Sarante, Michel El Buenón, Chiquito Team Band, Rochy RD, Yailin, El Alfa, and others who represent different generations and sounds you’ll hear throughout the country. But this video isn’t really about naming artists. It’s about understanding why the music matters. Because when you spend enough time in the Dominican Republic, you realize music isn’t always something people stop what they’re doing to enjoy.
