Rowena Tibbetts is sixty-six. Everybody in Jonesport, Maine calls her Roe. Everybody except one person. For thirty-eight years her mother-in-law called her Rowena. Every single time. Thelma Tibbetts never said one unkind word to her, and she never said one kind word either. She came to every birthday, brought a pie, sat for one hour, and left. She signed her Christmas cards Thelma. Not Mom. Not Love. Roe decided what that meant in about the second year, and once she decided it, everything fit. Thelma died in July at ninety-one, and Roe was the one who had to clean out the house, because there is nobody else left. In the back shed, hanging on a nail over a workbench that had not been touched in thirty-two years, she found a lobster buoy. Green and white, with an orange tip. In Maine, every man's buoy colors are his own, registered with the state. From a half mile off in fog you can look at a buoy and say whose it is. Those were her father's colors. Her father drowned in Moosabec Reach in February of 1979, when Roe was nineteen. And the paint on it was new. This story is told slowly and clearly for English learners at Level 1 (A1).
