008 The Truth About Giving: Giving in The Epistles | Sunday School | 10-18-26

In this lesson of The Truth About Giving, we begin examining what the Epistles teach about giving, starting with Romans 12:8, Romans 12:13, and Romans 15:25–31. What does Paul mean when he says, “he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity”? Is the gift of giving the same thing as the responsibility all believers have to give? Through a study of key words, their biblical usage, and the surrounding context, we examine the relationship between sincere generosity, meeting the needs of fellow believers, and participating in the work of the ministry. We will also consider how Scripture uses the concepts of imparting, liberality, bountifulness, and singleness of heart. These passages help us understand that biblical giving is more than a financial transaction. It involves the heart, the motive, and the willingness to share what God has entrusted to us. Finally, we examine Paul's explanation of the contribution from the believers in Macedonia and Achaia for the poor saints in Jerusalem. Why did Paul describe the Gentile believers as debtors to those who had shared spiritual blessings with them? What does this passage teach us about the relationship between spiritual blessings and material assistance? This is the beginning of our study of giving in the Epistles, examining the Scriptures in context to understand what God has actually said about giving rather than imposing a system or requirement upon the text.
