Egypt covers about a million square kilometers, roughly Texas and New Mexico put together. Yet about 95% of Egyptians live within 20 km of the Nile and its delta, a strip that covers only about 6% of the country. Why? Almost no rain, deserts on every side, a river that floods on Ethiopia's schedule, 5,000 years of valley farming, a population that grew more than tenfold since 1897, the Aswan High Dam, a brand-new capital in the desert, and a fight over the water with Ethiopia's giant new dam.

The "about 6%" is our own measurement: a 20 km strip either side of the Nile and its delta branches (Natural Earth data), clipped to Egypt, in an equal-area projection. Density and water-per-person figures are our own calculations from the sources above.
