On June 13, 1944, one day after Carentan fell to American forces, German infantry and armored assault guns struck back against the 101st Airborne Division and pushed U.S. paratroopers toward the town. This video follows the desperate fighting of the 506th and 501st Parachute Infantry Regiments, including Ronald Speirs and D Company, as isolated positions, mortar crews, antitank guns, bazookas, supply jeeps, and hastily committed reserves struggled to rebuild a collapsing defensive line. The situation changed when Combat Command A of the 2nd Armored Division reached Carentan with Sherman tanks, armored infantry, and artillery, allowing the Americans to launch a coordinated counterattack toward Baupte and along the Périers highway. The battle shows why capturing Carentan did not end the struggle for this vital Normandy road junction-and how holding its approaches long enough for armored reinforcements to arrive helped secure the connection between the Utah and Omaha beachheads.
