On November 21, 1944, USS Sealion (SS-315) detected a powerful Japanese warship formation near Formosa and began a dangerous night surface attack led by Commander Eli Reich. After firing six bow torpedoes at the battleship Kongō and three stern torpedoes toward Nagato, Sealion watched Kongō absorb serious damage yet continue northeast at roughly sixteen knots. As worsening seas battered both vessels, Sealion pushed its machinery to the limit in a relentless radar-guided pursuit while progressive flooding slowly robbed Kongō of speed and stability. The battleship eventually fell behind the main formation, turned toward Keelung, lost propulsion, and capsized before a massive explosion erased its radar return. This documentary reconstructs the torpedo attack, the storm chase, Kongō’s damage-control struggle, the sinking of destroyer Urakaze, and the extraordinary sequence that turned an apparently unsuccessful submarine strike into one of the most remarkable battleship losses of World War II.
