I'm Gerald Whitfield, and today we're testing Jason Meade's own written account against the evidence in his retrial. Today's case is the retrial of former Franklin County deputy Jason Meade, charged in the December 2020 shooting death of 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr. Meade was part of a US Marshals fugitive task force searching for a different man when he followed Goodson home and fired a rifle through his storm door. Goodson was hit six times, all from behind. He had a lawful carry permit, and his pistol was found fully loaded and unfired. There was no body camera footage of the shooting. The key moment came on cross-examination. Meade's roughly ten-page written statement, made about a month later, said Goodson's car stopped and the driver aimed a gun. A school camera showed one continuous turn with no stop, and Meade admitted that part was untrue. Jurors later said they were deadlocked, and the judge urged them to keep deliberating. On May 7, 2026, they found Meade guilty of reckless homicide but could not reach a verdict on murder, so a mistrial was declared on that count. Sentencing was set for July 16, 2026. This is what happens when a memory written down without the tape meets the camera.
