The Mighty Diamonds were formed in 1969 in Trenchtown, Kingston, by Donald “Tabby” Shaw, Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson and Lloyd “Judge” Ferguson. But before the world knew them as The Mighty Diamonds, they were school friends. They first sang under the name The Limelight, before becoming The Diamonds, after Tabby Shaw’s mother started calling them “The Diamonds.” And that name became a destiny. Three voices shaped like three stones of light. Three harmonies carrying the streets, the faith, the struggle and the dignity of a people. Tabby carried the lead voice with beauty, clarity and emotional power. Bunny warmed the harmony with soul and depth. Judge held the words, the meaning and the roots consciousness. Together, they did not only sing beautifully. They created an architecture of harmony. Their music carried the sweetness of classic soul vocal groups, but their message belonged deeply to Jamaica, to Trenchtown, to roots reggae, to Rastafari consciousness, to the people, to poverty, to exile, to Africa, to mercy, to survival and to hope. Their golden era at Channel One helped define a major chapter of roots reggae. With producer Joseph Hoo Kim and the heavy Channel One sound, The Mighty Diamonds created some of the most powerful songs of their generation. Right Time became a landmark roots reggae album. I Need A Roof spoke for those who needed shelter and dignity. Africa carried the call of roots and memory. Have Mercy became more than a song. It became a prayer. Have Mercy is one of those songs that does not simply pass through the ears. It stays inside. It returns. It touches a place words cannot fully explain. This tribute was born from deep love for that kind of harmony. A harmony that can be sweet and serious at the same time. A harmony that can lift the heart while speaking about real life. Only a few days later, Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson also passed away, on April 1, 2022. Two voices from the same historic trio left this world almost together. Lloyd “Judge” Ferguson remained as the keeper of the original memory, and the legacy continues. But the original vibration of Tabby, Bunny and Judge will always remain unique.
