Halo Stopped Giving Players the Tools to Become Creators — Why It Changed Everything | ft. Jon CJG

Halo Theater Mode gave players something almost no other game could: the ability to turn a video game into a creative platform. With Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, Theater Mode wasn't simply a way to replay matches. It became a virtual camera used to create Halo Machinima, films, screenshots and stories. Combined with Forge, Custom Games, File Share and Bungie's community features, Halo became more than a game, it became a gathering place for an entire generation of creators. In this documentary, I explore the history and importance of Halo Theater Mode, the rise of Halo Machinima, the creative community surrounding Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, and what happened as that ecosystem began to disappear. I also explore how those tools shaped my own journey from making Halo Machinima as a teenager to becoming a professional filmmaker. Joining me is Jon CJG (DigitalPh33r), creator of Arby 'n' the Chief and one of the Machinima directors who inspired me to start creating nearly two decades ago.
