Grade 9 · Biology · Chapter 2: Cell: The Building Block of Life
Topic: Diffusion vs osmosis; plasmolysis (why raisins swell in water)
Aligned to the CBSE Class 9 syllabus.
Why does a raisin swell up in water? Why does salt make cucumber slices watery? And why don't salty pickles go bad? 🤔
The answer is osmosis. In this lesson you see it happen in 3D: ink spreading in water (diffusion), water slipping through a cell membrane while sugar can't, a tank where the stronger side rises, and a plant cell shrinking away from its wall in salt water (plasmolysis). Every 3D model is also shown the way you draw it in your notebook (2D view).
What you will learn:
✅ Diffusion: from high to low concentration
✅ What "selectively permeable" means (think tea strainer!)
✅ Osmosis: water moves towards the stronger solution
✅ Cells in plain water: why animal cells can burst and plant cells get firm
✅ Plasmolysis, and who named it
✅ Let's solve one together: why a raisin swells
✅ Pickles, plant roots and fertiliser
✅ 3 common traps
✅ A quick 4-question quiz at the end
