One small true thing, and the eight mouths it passes through in a country district over a single day. Track one is the thing as it actually happened. Track eight is what comes back to the woman it is about, six months later, unrecognisable. Nobody in this record lies. Every teller adds only what they honestly believe, and by the end it is a different story with her name still on it.

Album notes: the record is built as a relay. The closing line of each track is the opening line of the next track's first verse, word for word, and the story mutates from there — a look becomes a suspicion, a suspicion becomes money, money becomes a ring, a ring becomes an engagement, and the children set the whole thing to a tune, which is the point at which it can no longer be killed. One woman sings all eight, but the way she sings changes as the telling changes: close and plain at the start, bright and certain in the middle, hollow at the end. No backing voices anywhere.
Flugelhorn carries the melody throughout, rounder and softer than a trumpet, over a full band from bar one, cut in the spirit of the mid-seventies Kingston studios where a whole band played in one room and nobody fixed the imperfections. Tempos run 76 to 90 BPM.
