Gym wisdom says pulldowns are for guys who can't do pull-ups yet. The research says something far more interesting, and it changes how you should train your back. In this video I break down what the pull-up and the lat pulldown actually do to your lats, and why the real difference has almost nothing to do with the muscle. We look at EMG data from James Cook University, the McMaster study that tested 8 to 12 reps against 20 to 25, and the stretch research behind the bottom of the rep. Then the two studies that seem to disagree: elite college swimmers whose pull-ups barely tracked their pulldown numbers, and college students who never touched a pull-up bar for eight weeks and still more than doubled their pull-ups. You'll get the grip details that matter, a one-set test that tells you which exercise should lead your back day, and a simple weekly plan with progression. 0:00 The pulldown verdict 1:17 How the lats actually work 2:19 What EMG says about both exercises 3:51 Who moves: you or the bar 5:05 Who decides how heavy the set is 6:12 The rep range window 8:19 The pull-up's hidden advantage 10:10 Two studies that seem to disagree 13:23 How the wrong choice stalls a back 15:00 Grip width, palms and behind-the-neck 16:56 The one-set test 19:08 A simple weekly plan 20:00 What to realistically expect Titan Coach breaks down what actually builds muscle, no hype, no fluff.
