Uganda’s Parliament has debated pressing national security and human rights concerns, with opposition legislators demanding answers over reports of individuals being detained in ungazetted facilities without trial. During the parliamentary proceedings, concerns were raised about the legality of detentions, accountability within security agencies and the need to uphold the rule of law. Government ministers, including the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Defence, responded to the issues raised, acknowledging the concerns and highlighting matters relating to security personnel welfare and equipment. At 10:41, Prof. Kamuntu addressed the House, commending Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi for his performance in Parliament while reminding him about the importance of respecting leadership structures outside the House. The government also gave an overview of Uganda’s national security situation, describing the country as peaceful, stable and secure. The Minister pointed to government programmes, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), as part of efforts to address socio-economic factors associated with insecurity. The sitting further addressed a tragic incident in which a student was reportedly shot by police. Government pledged a thorough investigation, with members calling for accountability and justice.
