While George Washington works to keep his army alive, Congress turns to Benjamin Franklin for help overseas. His destination: France, where sympathy for the American cause—and a chance to weaken Britain—might open some important doors. Today we consider the workings behind Franklin’s mission: why America needed French support, why France was already helping quietly, and why openly recognizing American independence was a much bigger gamble. Franklin’s popularity could help, but diplomacy would take patience. Our shave follows the French theme with a vintage Fontenille straight razor, stamped “134,” and one of my favorite soaps, Pré de Provence No. 63. Two passes, a little discussion of the old razor, and the matching No. 63 aftershave balm finish the day. Today’s gear: • Razor: Vintage French Fontenille, marked 134 • Soap: Pré de Provence No. 63 • Post-shave: Thayers Lemon Witch Hazel • Aftershave: Pré de Provence No. 63 Balm And yes, Ben’s umbrella drink is a little artistic license. Getting to France wasn’t quite a pleasure cruise! Thanks for joining me for another shave and a little history. #WetShaving #StraightRazor #BenjaminFranklin #AmericanRevolution #PreDeProvence #Fontenille Great shaving content from my friends @BarberDave @NurseDave @MarkSzorady @garys_shave @straightfacedwithluecke3262 @shootintheshave #shaving #straightrazorshave #traditional #traditionalshaving #wetshavingcommunity #hobby #dayinthelife #groom #grooming #barber
