Set among forested mountains, sheltered bays, and islands, this former capital of Russian America offers a distinctive blend of scenery, history, and culture. In this episode, we stroll through downtown Sitka, step inside St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, browse local artwork and colorful nesting dolls in the gift shops, and visit the public library overlooking the water. Along the way, we take in views of the bridge, mist-covered mountains, and the surrounding landscape. Changing skies bring a different mood to each part of our short visit. Our seven-day Alaska cruise, sailing round trip from Vancouver, continues to Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.
