In this documentary, we travel to 15 remote communities hidden around the outer edges of Los Angeles County, where desert roads, mountains, ranches, scattered homes, and isolated settlements can make it difficult to believe you’re still connected to one of America’s largest metropolitan areas. We begin in Lake Los Angeles, a desert community whose ambitious artificial lake disappeared long ago. Then we travel through places such as Neenach, Juniper Hills, Leona Valley, and Elizabeth Lake, where residents live among farmland, hills, long roads, and limited local services. Higher in the mountains, Wrightwood and Big Pines reveal another Los Angeles entirely — one filled with pine forests, mountain roads, cold winters, and even snow. The journey continues through Castaic, San Francisquito Canyon, Alpine, Pearblossom, Sun Village, Lake Hughes, Gorman, and Agua Dulce, communities shaped by everything from ranching and agriculture to reservoirs, freeways, wildfire risk, and geographic isolation. Some are beautiful. Some are extremely quiet. Others can make everyday access to jobs, shopping, healthcare, and services more complicated. But they all share one surprising fact: they exist within the same enormous county associated with Hollywood and urban Los Angeles.
