Sermon 5.3.26 1 Corinthians Week Twelve: Spiritual Gifts
1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Spiritual Gifts
Demonstrated by Jesus
Wisdom (Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7)
Knowledge (Jesus as child in temple, Luke 2; Jesus answers Satan’s temptation, Luke 4)
Faith (his prayer in garden of Gethsemane, Matthew 26)
Healing (numerous, see Mark 2,7,&10 as examples)
Miraculous Signs (controlled storms, Mark 4; raised Lazarus from Dead, John 11, fed thousands, Matthew 14)
Prophecy (spoke truth to the woman at the well, John 4; spoke on behalf of God the Father, John 12:49)
Discernment (he knew the hearts and minds of those around him, Matthew 9:4; Mark 2:8; Luke 5:22)
Tongues (literally, languages, so yes, Jesus spoke many languages - we will cover the gift of tongues deeper in 1 Corinthians 14)
Source of gifts
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”
The same Spirit that empowered them through Jesus is the same power that is available to us. John 14:12,16-17 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father…And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth.”
Same Spirit, different gifts
1 Corinthians 12:11,29-30 “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines…Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?”
Ephesians 4:11-12 “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.”
Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Unity Through Interdependence
1 Corinthians 12:12-14 “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.”
Ephesians 4:12-13,16 “So that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ…From him [Jesus] the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”
