Comparing cheapo microphones in my home podcasting setup. I have an untreated studio environment. Pressed wood panel board walls. Noisy forced air furnace. Wind noise. Street noises. A condenser mic doesn't work well for me. A dynamic cardiod pickup mic does.
I compared a Behringer XM-1800S microphone to a Shengyue BM-700, which is very popular on eBay. The former sells for around $50 Canadian for a set of three. The latter is about $25 for a single mic with a shock mount, wind screen, and crap cable.
The Shengyue is noisy. You can pile it under ten pillows and blankets to muffle noise and it will still generate an audible hiss. The same audible hiss is on every Youtube video I've seen using it as well. I really don't like this mic.
The Behringer picks up practically no background noise. Very impressive for the price point. The intent of this video is to show just how well this mic works in an untreated audio environment.
Finally, I compared the two mics to my Shure SM-57, which is a great unit, but that cost over $140 shipped. Is it better than my Behringer? Yes. Does it sound $120 better than my Behringer? Not really, but you'll have to judge that for yourself.
Everything was run through a Mackie 1202 VLZ4 mixer with all EQ knobs set to unity (the middle). A Behringer MDX-4800 compressor/gateway is also in the mix. I am using decent balanced XLR cables with everything, and that includes the Shengyue.
A shout out to Ryan Urlacher at yourhitechredneck.com -- I found his instructional videos very helpful. I hope people will support him buy purchasing gear from Amazon thru his site.
