In September 2026, OpenAI said its AI agents produced a 166-page proposed proof about the Navier–Stokes equations, the math that describes how water and air move: with a smooth, carefully controlled outside push, a swirl of fluid can speed up without limit in a finite time. It's one of the four routes the official $1 million problem allows. So is the Millennium Prize problem solved? The Clay Mathematics Institute says it has "apparently been settled" but still lists it as active, and OpenAI says it doesn't intend to claim the prize. The harder question, whether a fluid can break the equations with nothing pushing it, is still open. In this video: the equations explained from scratch, Clay's four "doors", how the blow-up works (simplified from OpenAI's paper), what a computer proof-checker does and doesn't check, and the fight over credit.
