The harshest critic you will ever meet doesn't live next door. It lives in your head, and it may be speaking in someone else's voice.
So where did that voice learn its lines? In this video we follow one idea, a recording made early and played back for decades, through the research on how what children hear about themselves becomes what they say to themselves:
*A child can't check the facts:* Cooley's looking-glass self (1902) and Fairbairn's theory of why children blame themselves.
*What you did vs. what you are:* Kamins and Dweck (1999), five- and six-year-olds, and why labels stick.
*Do words leave marks?* Teicher et al. (2006) and two small brain-imaging studies, with every caveat.
*Love with a price tag:* conditional regard (Assor, Roth and Deci, 2004), withdrawn affection, and promises that never come true.
*Replaying the recording:* how to question the voice, from changing the pronoun (Kross et al., 2014) to self-compassion.
That voice is a recording, not a verdict.
