285 km long, 100 m wide, and walled by nothing but sand: Afghanistan's Qosh Tepa Canal is pulling the Amu Darya across the desert. In 2023, satellites saw a 30 km² lake appear beside it. Officials say it will water 550,000 hectares. Downstream, Central Asia is watching its river.
